  • Estimated costs of about $3,900. GEEA includes a $200 subsidy given to each attendee. Costs include estimated roundtrip airfare to Peru, hotel rooms (9 nights), tour guide fees, all breakfasts and many lunch/dinners, museum entrance fees, in-country train & three in-country commercial airline flights, etc. GEEA subsidy of $200 helps reduce total cost.
  • Total travel dates of June 16-25. Tour dates are June 17-24.
  • 25 professional development contact hours..
  • Participants will engage in professional visits through visits to local public and private schools—including a potential teaching opportunity at the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences—and attend an economic briefing at the Central Bank of Peru. The journey continues in Cusco, where attendees will explore the Sacred Valley and ancient Inca ruins, concluding with a scenic train ride to Machu Picchu. The itinerary balances structured academic site visits and iconic educational sightseeing with free time for local exploration and acclimation.
  • The tour includes economic education sessions. Attendees are asked to create a lesson plan, professional development session, or other project that brings what they learned in Peru back to the U.S.
  • This Study Tour to Peru is a highly effective way of learning about an economy and experiencing firsthand, not only the educational system, but also the reality of everyday life. Teachers who have participated in GEEA Study Tours remark that it was “an experience of a lifetime.” The objective is that teachers return to their classrooms with renewed appreciation of the importance of economics and enthusiasm for economics education. Students will ultimately gain from their teacher’s life-changing experience.
  • The Study Tour will be led by Dr. Stephen Day, Director of the VCU Center for Economic Education, and Dr. Claudia Sicoli, Director of the Centro de Educación Económica de la Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) in Lima, Peru.
